Like the title says, what ever happened to the other mold set(s). One of the showcase cars (Unofun's ride) is from the "midwest molds". Any of you history buffs know the story on those molds?

Thanks

It's one of those mysteries that I doubt anyone will be able to solve. The molds on the west coast made their way to Oregon and Washington State eventually. They now reside in Pittsburgh. The Midwest molds.. nobody knows. My guess is they were scrapped when the company closed shop, but who knows.. they might be lurking in a warehouse somewhere!

are the molds copyrighted
I know its a big under taking to make molds if they are not copyrighted
i might make molds for my cimbria
just for crash parts.

Not copyrighted, but licensed or wholly owned. The Sterling molds are wholly owned by Sterling Sports Cars, LLC. Anyone making a mold off their car for profit would be held accountable. The Cimbria molds are long gone. At this point anyone can make a mold of their Cimbria and sell the parts if so inclined, but I'd imagine that Joe Palumbo still owns the rights to the name "Cimbria" and thus you couldn't sell a full body from a mold under that name. I could be wrong, but you know what I mean. The Sebring molds are in four tractor trailers in Vermont. Those are wholly owned by one person who has no intention of doing anything with them the last I talked with them. They are in poor shape and should either be a) scrapped or b) bought and rebuilt if someone needed parts.

The challenge is to find someone willing to pull the molds. For a Cimbria body, you'd most likely invest anywhere from $25K to $50K just for a full set of molds - all the body pieces. Dave has at least that invested if not more in the Sterling molds, and those were already made - they just had to be re-set in some cases.
If you were serious, I'd talk to some of the established kit builders - Factory Five would be my first choice.

are you talking about buying or making your own molds.

I can make molds off my car a lot cheaper than that.

Wow
This post first started as "What happen to the molds"(sterling) correct me if I'm wrong

Then it went to "How much would it cost to make some"(cimbria)

And now its turned into something else.

I don't think we are talking apples to apples here.

I think cimbria owners have bigger issues than where to buy body parts, like the cost to replace the windshield and if someone was to make molds for the car the windshield will still be an issue.

Let it go

Yep, good point Brett. We got way off course here with the original post. Cimbria windshields are now available, just so everyone knows, but they do cost a good chunk of change. If there are no other pertinent responses to the original post, I'll lock the thread.

I've split this topic into a separate discussion on Cimbria molds. For the moment this topic will be locked. If someone wants to contribute something like "I've found the Midwest molds!", PM me and I'll unlock the thread.
