Turn Signal Relay

From what I know the turn signal stalk comes out of the left side of the steering column, but on my car it comes out of the right - how would I go about identifying which stalk and relays for turn signals would fit?

Any markings on that stalk? Is there two stalks or just the one? Is there a hole on the opposite side of the existing stalk, like there should be something else there? Two possibilities: You're missing a stalk, which would make the steering column one from a Super Beetle - the right side stalk is for washer/wiper or if you only have one stalk, the column is installed upside down. Take a look at the other end of the steering shaft, where it connects to the rag joint at the steering box. Does the shaft look like a piece of lattice metal? If it does, it's a collapsible shaft, one from a Super. That should narrow down what column it is.

No stalks at all but here is a few pictures of what I have. The plugs are labeled as turn signals

That's a Super Beetle column or late Beetle. They were the same column after '74 I think. You'll need the turn signal / wiper assembly to put under that wheel adapter. Depending on how that adapter is mounted, it may not fit. Most of those assemblies can be found online VW Wiper/Washer Switch, 74-79 Type 1 - JBugs.com and VW Turn Signal Switch, Bug 72-79, Ghia 72-74 - JBugs.com

I have no idea how they get mounted in the column. I've never used the OE Beetle column in any of my cars, just personal preference. There should be several VW car clubs near you - I would suggest to contact one or more and become involved. Chances are someone will know more practical specifics than you might get on a forum.

Oh, and make sure you weld in a cover to seal up that hole left by the shifter relocation before you try to drive it again. A hole like that can easily bend the chassis....

Yeah I got it welded up today, don't quite trust myself with my little stick welder *laugh*

Thanks for the links for the turn signal relays. I'm going to do some more research on fitment into the steering column I have and proceed accordingly.

On an unrelated note, my headlights stopped working in the middle of my drive home today. My tails and front lower lights (drl in modern terms) worked fine, but the headlights went totally dark. Trying to figure out if it's a loose connection somewhere or the actual switch going bad. Either way, very dicey drive home *eek!*
