I been thinkin about using a 7 inch tablet molded into the dash as my car putor
use the ear phone out plumbed to my amps and speakers.
Then I would have a hands free phone, nav, music, video's ,and internet. Not sure about the backup camera yet it might be a seperate unit.
I will tether the internet from my phone to the tablet. so i don't have to pay for a seperate plan

the best part a 7 inch android tablet is 100.00 or less on flea bay

You will see I have a 7 inch tablet and am going this very same way with it. When you see the photo you will notice that a 7 inch tablet is the biggest you probably would want to go with. Anything bigger over powers the interior with its size.

By using a tablet, combined with an SD card input, you can have GPS, Wifi, bluetooth, movies, music, and much, much more. Especially if its a droid tablet. When things get tricky is when you try to figure out how to make the tablet turn on when you want it to, and turn off. Also making the unit hide inside the dash helps keep your car from being broken into as well.

Lots to consider, but in the end you will like it I think, it will simplify many things in the dash into one single unit.

On another note, if your handy enough,... Many computer audio systems run off of 12vdc via a transformer that plugs into the wall. They have an internal amplifier, base cube, and multiple satellite speakers that are smaller in size than a car audio system. Then you could possibly add a Dolby 5.1 system to your car with minimal intrusion to the interior.

Just a thought.

Yaughn,

Now that you've had the tablet for almost a year, have you been using it? Is it still reliable? Any problems with it?

Yes, its been working just fine. In fact i have two. A pan-digital e-reader, and the other one i posted the pics of.

i ran into one problem where the start up image size got erased. But a quick call to customer service fixed that in a couple of seconds.

The GPS and Wifi do not need to be directly exposed to a window, or anything. They work just fine even in doors or mounted in a box ( my mock up) inside my garage with the garage doors closed.

The only thing I would really like is a way to change the start up back ground to say sterling like in the steering wheel badge. So it looks like the Bentley's nav system boot screen

If your Android tablet is rooted and has an unlocked Bootloader, there is probably a way. I've never played with a tablet, but I know on my phone I can change the startup "animation". Why the quotes? Because it's not a video file, but actually a series of individual image files played rapidly in sequence; each image file is a "frame" of the video. If you wanted a static image, just use a single image and hold it.

Try that mp3.com site or xda-developers.com for more info for your specific model of tablet...

I think if memory serves mine is a windows CE based system.
I remember I found the file it used for the boot loader. I just have to remember where it was. Then I replace it with my picture file named exactly the same with the same dimensions and it will work fine.

Its just remembering how to find it again.
