Yup, I've known this for some time but when it came time to get a filter for the car I went for the easy route and got a K&N just to keep progress moving on.
Now that the car is basically done, I'm going back and fixing these quick fixes that I did.
Hold a oem type filter to the sun. No light get through. Hold a K&N up to the sun, light gets through.

There's a reason why the K&N flows more. the surface area is more porous which allows more dirt to get by. Alot more dust
I suppose if you use them in an environment with little to no dust I wouldn't worry so much but here in the desert we have lots of dust

I've always used Wix filters. When in construction, thats what was used on the equipment. Repairs to heavy duty construction equipment is not cheap so I figured if thats what they used for their equipment that's moving dirt all day its more than good enough for my cars.

Found this guy that did a test on air filters

Back to my build

This is the OEM filter box before any changes that I'm going to attempt to use
Things that I had to consider is will it handle the cfm that the engine requires and having a intake that I can be modified so it will connect to the intake tube of the engine.

Progress on the air box
Removed the back section to make it easier to install
Made a tray for the air box to fit into.

Got it all back together but haven't done a test drive yet.
It may just be me but when I started the car up to see how it ran with the new air box, the car sounded a little quieter
I'll let you know after the test drive if it did help with the cabin noise.
I'll also see if it made a difference to the fuel trims.

Test results are in (Sort of)
Haven't taken the car out yet but idling it till it goes into a closed loop.

First the data with the K&N Filter
Sterling with K&N filter.jpg

Short term fuel trim is making adjustments of almost -5.5% . If I'm understanding this stuff right the minus means its running lean and has to add more gas
Long term fuel trim hasn't registered yet
0% is perfect. Anything over or under 10% is not good so the 5.5% is acceptable.

OK now with the air box

Fuel trims are now closer to 0% and you can see the air flow rate is a little lower, might be from the difference in idle speed.
Might get better gas milage because of the lower fuel trims. Don't know for sure, I'm not an expert at this stuff, but this stuff does peak my interest

That’s neat that you got to “talk Sterling” to one of the original owners of the company. They were notoriously a little hard to track down and/or to get to talk. I like getting a peek into the early days of the saga.

This was sent to me years ago from another member.
Haven't talked to them in years and I didn't know if it was ok to mention their name so I omitted it.
