I was digging around on the net as I know VW based kit cars can be very loud vehicles. Even the most simple conversations can be held at yelling volumes due to the cabin noises involved.

Here is a link of a company that makes sound deadening material supposedly used in NASCAR and IROC. Its sound deadening material designed for loud cars, not the ultra modern quiet cars to make them quieter.

Sound Insulation: Marine Sound Insulation

This Aero-gel based insulation. It has the highest R-factor of any known substance to man. If you read up on it you will be stunned at its applications. This is by far the ultimate in cooling, as it reflects 99% of all heat aplied to it, and soundproofing is second to none as its structure is made up of 99% air. But this space age stuff also comes at a space age price too. But as prices drop it may well be worth keeping an eye on it.

I have become a huge fan of the modern sound deadening material. Even with just adding 8lbs of material to the floor and firewall of my Fiero, I was able to drop 2dbs. Now when I get into my friends Fieros, I am annoyed by the road noise.

I have started sound deadening my Sterling. I have the floor and tunnel covered. I also placed some behind the firewall. Next, I will foam in the sides.

My favorite material by far is RAAMaudio. I found it easy to use, high quality material, affordable and it works very well. It also can a good amount of heat.

Another material I like is Lizard Skin. It is a brush on elastomeric material with micro balloons. The micro balloons are void of air so it does not transmit heat or sound. It is crazy expensive ($130+ / gallon). I have not used it, but I have friends who have and all reviews are good.

This coating consisting of Kool Seal @ $22 per gallon and Micro Balloons @ $8.75 per gallong, is a sound, heat and vibration barrier to be used on either side or both sides of a firewalls, floorboards, and inner door skins. The mixture is very close to other products @ $130 to $160 per gallon.
1. Mix 20% of Kool Seal with 80% of Micro Ballons
2. Apply with brush or roller
3. Occasionally remix to keep Micro Balloons in suspension.

This is an excellent thread. I think that soundproofing is one of the most overlooked, "easy," very worthwhile modifications we can do for our cars. I get a lot of questions about how people can make their Sterling/Sebring seem like more of a "production car" in terms of the driving experience. Well, here's one big easy way.

A Sterling without soundproofing is like riding INSIDE of a fiberglass speaker enclosure. You get a lot of engine noise, road noise, and little rattles and creaks. When properly soundproofed, all of this is immensely improved.

The most important areas (and these are probably really obvious) are the "firewall" (back wall of the cabin), the side pods, and the floor. You can take it even further than this if you want. But if you at least put some sheet material on that back wall and some elastomer -- or even fiberglass batting -- around the rear window tunnel and in the side pods, you feel like you've just closed the door of a fairly high-end vehicle. When the canopy closes, most of the world just goes away except for whatever muffler sound you've dialed in.

On my last customer project I used lizard skin on a 1933 sedan delivery and the owner raved about how quiet it was he has a 350 lt1 corvette motor in it. I sprayed it in it makes the material expand and that according to the manufacter decreases db levels by 15%.

I wonder if this home made mixture can be sprayed as well. I used and undercaoting gun.

2/3,s of a pail of lizard skin did he entire car. I wonder if the leftovers would do the cimbria

I was trying to convey that the rep told me that spraying the product as opposed to hand rolling it added 15% more sound deadening . After reading my own post it seemed unclear just a clarification

Let us know how the home made solution goes. I am guessing that it will be 90% as effective as the brand name, but a lot cheaper.

hey whatever works you can afford to double up for that price.
I went to a swap meet sat. they wanted 182.00 for a half gallon.
