Single Stage Paint vs 2 Stage Paint

Found this video that pretty much covers the differences between the two.


Couldn't find a section on painting so I put it here.
Might be worth creating a section of its own.
I'm sure people have good and bad experiences to share when it comes to painting cars.


I used Speedokote single stage paint on my car with an epoxy primer.

Having painted a few over the years, plus my time in the sign business, he's covered a lot of the basics (though, honestly, I didn't sit through the entire video). Paint quality is directly related to manufacturer, and I'm standing by that. I can take the same single stage color from BASF and one from Auto Body Toolmart (which I've purchased from numerous times) using their house brand, and the BASF will outlast an economy paint by years. I would only do a single stage on a car (I have) if it was going to remain indoors in a garage or if I didn't care that it would get chipped from road use. Touch-ups are easier. My 'show' cars have always been base/clear. More color options, more additive options. A little more latitude if you screw up.

Lets not jump the gun on this.

My intent was to show the basic difference between the two types of paint, and I thought this guy did a good job of it.

Paint quality is a whole different subject.
as is fillers, glazing compound, spot fillers, sealers, primers, sanding products, paint guns etc. And this doesn't even cover fiberglass repairs. Here also brands make a difference

There are tons of videos on each one of these subjects and it may be a little confusing to some as to which way to go.
Hence I thought if there was a section for body work and painting, members could list what worked best for them (or what didn't) for each of these stages and that may help others.

Brand quality I agree helps the job go easier and the results are better than the cheaper brands. These items may cost more than the cheaper brands, but the end results are worth the extra expense. (I think)

My thoughts on using a single stage paint are, I knew this was never going to be a show car, and the car was never going to be perfect. So I picked a high quality single stage paint to paint the car with.
I saw no reason to go with a 2 stage paint.

in the future if I still have the car and it needs a paint job I'll weigh the pluses and minuses of the two paints again and see what will work best for me.
