Seat Belts

I saw the other thread on seat belts, but where did you guys mount them? Basically just a plate behind the bolts on the other side of the fiberglass, top shoulder and bottom hip?

Pretty much what I did. I used the stock VW anchor point on the tunnel for the latch and placed the retractor unit behind the seat on the side wall right before the curve at the back. That and the shoulder mount both had 1/4" plate aluminum backers behind the fiberglass.

Would you be able to provide pictures? I believe that my stock seat belt point may have been cutoff as part of the tunnel is missing.

Worst case just weld a nut to the tunnel. Do it in parts and allow to cool so you don't warp the threads. If you are doing drop pans you could drill through those, with a backer plate, and use a seatbelt that has a longer buckle side and mount.

I pulled mine from a VW donor - late 90's I believe. Had to get creative with mounting the latch as the latches weren't as long as the original ones that came with the car. Other than that it was pretty straight forward with mounting the rest - used grade 8 hardware and some decent metal plates to create a wider surface to prevent pull through.

One thing to keep in mind is the locking mechanism is often done by the unit being level. Mount the seat belt reel un-level enough and the seat belt will stay locked or lock way too easily.

Yeah I was able to get my seat belts unjammed by using the level tactic and blowing out all the crap from them.

I like the setup you have! Slightly off topic, is the rear all carpet? Looks really clean.

Thanks, took a while to get it how I wanted where they fit the seats no matter what position but I'm happy. The tub is just simply painted black so it looks more "finished."

Its the law here in Nevada to have them.

Without them the car will fail inspection.
I've never worried about inspection, im in Washington state they don't do inspections unless it's going from salvage to a driver again, then it's mostly to make sure the parts aren't stolen. Washington is weird.

In Minnesota we just need to have whatever the car had from the factory - so I have to match what a 1975 VW Bug had. I assumed "just lap belts", so that's what I bought/installed - not like any Cop would know otherwise! I recommend this site: https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/ The guy was nice to work with when there was a small mistake with my order.
