I'm getting ready to place an order for resin and I was wondering what grade of polyester resin is used when building the bodies for these cars??

General purpose resin, ISO resin, Vinyl Ester resin. ??

The molds are just about done (made with general purpose resin) and I'm thinking of building the parts with ISO resin and I was just curious what resin is used on the bodies of these cars.

I’ll be honest (and it’s a little embarrassing) but I’m not 100% sure what my fabricator is using. I know that they aren’t doing anything with epoxy (not because epoxy is inferior but because it’s expensive and they aren’t doing any projects for which they need the properties of epoxy.) I’m 90% sure they use just good old general purpose polyester resin… but they modify it various ways depending on what they’re doing. I know their tooling gel coat is very durable and they have several subtypes of the non-tooling gel coat depending on how sandal they want it to be. I know you were asking about the rest of the build-up, not the gel coat, but I honestly don’t know.

That said, I’d have no qualms about using general purpose resins for car parts like we’re talking about. It is plenty durable and doesn’t need to be super light or to have special anti-corrosion or food industry qualities, etc. I don’t know if that helps at all. I think you could use any of the above. I know you like to play with stuff and and learn new materials.

Thanks
I was getting an order together and the ISO resin wasn't that much more than the general purpose resin and it offered better bonding strength so that got me doing a little research on the different types of resin.
Read an article saying that the boat manufacturers were switching over to ISO resin.

I ordered ISO resin. We'll see how it works out .

I use vinylester and like it very much. In terms of strength and bonding it is rated between polyester resin and epoxy. The main advantage is significantly lowes shrinkage and less stress cracking.
