Porsche brake conversion wohs

It appears as though Vdubengineering has fallen off the face of the earth. He/she rarely returns emails, and even when you ask where to send the money, you rarely get a response.

I have heard from a few other members that this is the 'norm' rather than the exception for lanner.

If anyone has, or knows anyone else that does this conversion, I only need the information. But if I can keep from building this stuff myself, or hiring out for it to be done, Id love to just buy a kit.

Im specific to using the 88 turbo stuff I have due to the offset change, as well as the 4 pot calipers, and big 300mm disks.

So if anyone has any info, Id appreciate it. It appears I now need to find another vendor to do this mod. If I do this myself, I will be posting the info publicly so other members dont have to go through this BS like I have.

For the rears, yes. But its the fronts that are the problem.

I talked with another member last night, and I may have a solution. Apparently there is one other source for the caliper adapter bracket out there. Hopefully google translate will do me justice in my attempts to speak german.

The price is prohibitive @ 990GBP.
If there prices were cheaper Id be talking with red9 about several items.

This is the culprit that I need. It uses the VW bearing mount bolt holes to mount the caliper bracket onto the spindle.

Its a bracket that locates the caliper on the front. The rest is pretty simple. a little machining to fit VW bearings in the porsche hubs.

This is not the proper bracket dimensions for my application

And then add a grease seal

I stopped by a machine shop today, and the front hub modifications will run me about 150 (ready to install).
The brackets are another thing. Given I am apparently the only person out there to put late turbo brakes on a type 1 chassis, the technical info isnt present for the caliper adapters. I have about 75% of the info I need to have them made, but billet 4140 is spendy, and at 80 bucks an hour, this could get spendy....*very frustrated*

You don't need any special tooling to make that bracket, just make sure the bits are sharp.

or am I missing something

Got another question for you

Why are you using 4140 steel

A bit of over kill isn't it

Most brackets that I know of are made out of mild steel or 6061 aluminum

After talking with the local machinist, he knew about this mod from his past.
He said those caliper brackets are made out of heat treated 4140 that has been machined.
The brackets are largley flat, but there are a few features that make it necessary to replicate them out of 1" thick stock. The caliper mounts are off set to the plate in a way that of course makes it cost more. LOL

Ive seen some kits that fixed this by bending the plate twice.

But in a new development, Ive managed to get ahold of lanner by email and by phone. Albeit breif responses. (Funny it only took 3 months this last time). He says hes looking for a set of brackets now.

We'll see....

Stop mucking about and slap a pair of Wilwood radial mounts on.

I made these 2 part alloy brackets in an hour using hand tools.

Are you looking for the stock caliber brackets or do they need to be custom made??

There is a complete set of 944 turbo rear suspension for sale on craigs list

I have the rear stuff, thats the easy peasy part of the mod.
The front caliper brackets have to be custom made.

On the front spindles there is an inner bearing cover that has 3 bolts holding it in place. These three holes are used to mount the new caliper bracket.

The caliper bracket is largerly a thick metal plate, but is offset at the mounting point for the caliper.
Depending on the year of brakes used, the caliper will be slightly different for early or late turbo calipers.
I chose the late turbo stuff due to the larger positive offset change to help with wheel selection down the road.
The hubs will cost about 150 bucks for the machining. Insert the bug inner bearing and install a new grease seal and done.

The fact that the mounting point for the caliper is offset (outward) makes this a machinists job. which could run me as much as 500 bucks at 80 bucks an hour to have them made. That is if I supply the DXF file.
Lanners complete kit is 250USD.
So getting the brackets from him is kind of a sticking point for me right now. He operates out of Ontario Canada, and getting ahold of him has been difficult. He rarely answers email. And never gets back with me on phone calls.
There may be another option in germany. But Im waiting for a response from them too.

So just to clarify this for an old man:D

You can't use the OEM Porsche bracket?

You have to make a completely new one?

So quit screwing around and make one*laugh*

I guess what I don't understand is why you can't make this bracket.

You've made a dash, you've modified that Subaru transmission, you made your own steering wheel adapter. I could go on.
Whats so special about this bracket that you can't make it?? Its just a bracket.

From this guys track record if your going to wait on him to make it, the car will never get done.
