After 12.5 years the car is technically road legal with plates put on it today. Plenty more to do including get the canopy seal on to stop the hard bounces, windshield removed and reinstalled and sloppy steering fixed.

This is unacceptable!!
A member gets his Sterling back on the road and nobody says nothing about that.

Will,
you are one of the few that has accomplished this. Kudos to you.

This is a major milestone.
I hope someday I'll be able to join you in one of the few that has put a sterling back on the road.

Thanks Brett! Driving is a solid first step as it keeps the dream a live. Plenty to do still but at least I can start enjoying it.

Well after talking with my son, who was 6 when I bought the car, I am keeping it and perhaps have a new push that I have been missing to get things done on it.
1. Needs body prep and paint.
2. Gauges resolved.
3. T-top canopy would be ideal but also may redesign the rear tunnel window. (if you have a spare rear window let me know!)
4. Carpet + sound deadening.

This is all doable just need to put in the hours.

Good to hear your going to keep her.

With my build I look at it like, if I don't get it back on the road it will just keep slipping through the cracks, and it will never get there.
To many of these cars get passed from owner to owner and either they butcher it so bad (from trying ideas or they took on more then they could chew) its not worth finishing or they just loose interest in it and it never gets finished.

Look forward to seeing your progress.

Is this the car that was advertised on marketplace in the Toledo area? If so I was ready to snap it up. Would love to have one. Hope to find one in northeast indiana general area.

Decided to replace the gauges vs work with the SW ones that came with the car. Going to go ahead and get the oil temp and fuel gauge from Speedhut. Great gauges with lots of options.

First of 5 gauges arrived. Hopefully will be able to pull the pod this week and get them in. Different look from the SW gauges but I think the brushed rings will help the rather bland interior out. Not to mention working guages will be nice!

So first reason I stayed with it was that was one of the 2 the car already had and I just assumed. While a head temp gauge was seemingly recommended to prevent burning up valves, in my mind knowing that the oil temp is where it should be on an aircooled engine was important so I stuck with that for now.

Long summer with little work on the car. I did get the gauges wired and into the car today. Need to get the oil temp sensor mounted but really happy with them. The colors in the picture don't even come close to the pure white they are - I can't recommend them enough and already saving for the matching tach and speedo.

I have also hit my patience with trying to get the engine tuned and have a VW shop just a few miles away willing to help. While it runs and idles I think their expertise will just help work the bugs out.

Looking good Will

I have never known an engine so picky than the VW type 1 engine.
Some will run fine with a certain carb and/or distributor and other will run terrible with them. Not that its the problem.
Hope that shop gets it running right. Let us know what the problem was.
