I posted that "failed rock star moment" a few days ago about taking my Sterling to my high school reunion, and I got an interesting comment on the car...
Over the years, I've had people guess all kinds of weird or interesting things about the make of the car. Like Rick said, I to have gotten mainly guesses of Ferrari and Lamborghini insofar as those are the cars people always think of when they see something exotic.
But at the reunion, when one of my best friends from high school showed up, I asked him if he saw my car parked out in the grassy lot when he came in. And he paused and thought a moment and then said, "Oh...you mean that red one? I didn't know what that was! I thought it was a new model of Corvette!"
And the thing that I find cool about that was the word "new." Chris isn't the first person who has assumed that a Sterling is something new and cutting edge. On closer inspection, most people figure out that it must be older based on some of the retro styling things that give it away. But still...the car's design is coming up on 40 years old and yet a lot of lay people still think it looks 'new' or, I've even gotten, "futuristic."
The comment/question that always makes me roll my eyes is, "Is that car real?"
No, bone-head, it's a friggin' hologram. It's inflatable. Or perhaps you're hallucinating it due to the wacky-tobaccy.
Obviously, what they're asking is whether or not it is a replica of anything, which is an understandable question. Most people think it's even cooler when they learn that it isn't a replica, it's a uniquely-styled kit car, it's owner-built, and it's quite affordable.
But I think it's funny when a certain small handful people seem disappointed that it ISN'T a Ferrari. I had somebody run up to me all excited once, telling me how awesome they thought the car was and how cool it looked, just to later kind of thumb their nose at it when they found out it wasn't a $200,000 car. I thought that was ironic. Does it really make the car look different if you know it ISN'T absurdly expensive? Did it's lines change? Did its styling dissolve into a puddle? I actually think it's cool that it looks like $200,000 but cost less than $10,000. *thumbs up*
But I think my favorite comment was just somebody who came up and asked, "Hey... what...is that some kind of car or something?"
Um...how does one begin to answer that?
No, dip-sh*t; it's a sailboat. Arrrgh! *insane* *laugh*
