I have a Porsche engine that I am getting ready to sell. As I'm cleaning it up I noticed that it might have a turbo on it. IDon't no anything about turbos so is this in fact a turbo. If not what is it.

Ok my phone will not load pictures. I will try to
Load from my drop box. If it doesn't work I will load them later.
Thanks
Chuck

Not enough information Chuck. What type of motor? Any other photos you can post? It sort of looks like a forced air fan, but the photo isn't clear enough to tell.

Its on the 2.7 porsche engine that I am getting ready to sell. I didn't even notice it until I started moving some of the wires around to get some pics. I am totally clueless on this topic. what is the difference between a forced air fan and a turbo and what is the basic operation on a turbo? I was under the impression that a turbos basic function was to push more air so more fuel could be used, creating more power.

I don't have any more pics of this, but will get some tomarrow. I am at work for the night.

my basic understanding of a turbo is a vortex or tornado is created by the fans, which are turned by the exhaust air turning one side of the fan, the other side of the fan is pulling in the fresh air and forcing it into the engine. (so if the exhaust does not go into this, it is not a turbo)

and i also understand that it just adds more air into the air/fuel mixture, which makes it more fuel efficient.

this is only my basic understanding of turbos and superchargers. as i am building a diesel engine for my hot rod with two turbos and a supercharger on it. dont ask why, because i can damnit.

Thanks. Now that you mention it coming from the exhaust I do remember it. I don't think this does. Learning every day. As for two turbos and a super charger. Good luck. I know why you are doing it. You had too much room in the engine compartment and needed to fill it. *laugh*

Speaking of wild set ups did you see the counting cars episode where this fella put 2 motors into T bucket (I think it was anyway) each motor had 2 blowers. It ran quick but it was tough to see around.

Anyway thanks for the info

Not a turbo. I believe the turbos on Porsches is down low and toward the rear of the engine, near the exhaust. I'm thinking MAF (Mass Air Flow Meter)? Don't really know my Porsche engines.

A 2.7 what? Flat six air cooled? Inline 4? What car did it come from? Cyco might be right, if it's from a late model car with fuel injection, it may be part of the intake system.

A super charger takes the atmospheric pressure and compresses it through vanes into the carbs' at a volume greater than possible by induction (sucking), stuffing air into a supercharger from turbos is pointless as the compressor can only handle so much VOLUME through the vanes and would actually act as a restriction to the turbos.
Twin turbos on their own on the other hand can pump far more and don't suck horsepower from the engine to do it.
As far as the doicky on the porker lump, what is connected to it and what size is it, going by the clamp which would be either M10 or M13 spanner it's not too big.

yeah i did see that episode, it was pretty bad @ss.

Peter, you are correct, if that is what i was going to do. however the super will be feeding the air into the air intake. this will take care of the low end before the turbos spool up and continue to provide more air throughout the rpm cycle of the engine. the turbos will also feed into the air intake through another opening either before or after the opening for the super. they will not feed air to each other. and to make it even more interesting each turbo is only running off of 3 cylinders each.

again im doing it because i can, i have never seen it done, and it will be unique. imagine the sound of it going down the road. you will hear the whine from the super and then two separate turbo blow offs.

then when people look up they will see a 1934 4door Dodge Sedan, that has dually rear end under it, widen body, chopped body, and stretched.

Yeah, Brett that is it. I don't know what it came out of exactly, only told a 911 Targa. From what I had gathered on the samba and other porsche sites by the numbers it is a factory replacement 2.7 engine, most likely from the mid 70's.

Thanks
Chuck
