Heads-up Displays

Any thoughts here guys?

I know that they are available from late 90's Pontiac Bonnevilles, and newer Corvettes and some BMW's...

Anybody seen one that is just stellar? The Pontiac looks pretty basic with a speedometer function in numerals, and I believe it will also display the current radio station. It would be nice to find one that you could cycle through data, or that offered more at once - like speed, oil pressure, water temperature, volts, and +/- radio station. Boost? What else?

Would also be nice to see something other than that zombie green (not my favorite color). Red? Orange? Blue?

Other than the fact you'll need to tear the entire computer and senders out of the donor car? Yeah - more trouble than it's worth. A stand-alone system is this one: Defi - Defi-Link Display VSD CONCEPT and it's the only one I've seen that you can 'wire-at-will' to whatever senders you want. It seems an interesting item, and not that terribly expensive, though I wonder exactly how well it would work on our windscreen rake. Methinks it will be next to impossible to see, as the display needs a small reflective patch to reflect the info onto... and you know how small the visible area on our windshields actually is!

Actually... that might be a moot point. I just saw that they stopped production on this unit three years ago. There might be some still floating around out there though..

Hmmm - I kind of like that one...

Well, aside from the fact that it really may be completely redundant and in reality, unnecessary - the bling factor is inarguable. :D

Seriously, all your arguments are taken well. I don't know that these sysems REALLY add any value to what you already have on your guages. I like that system you posted above in the amount and degree of flexibility it has. Does it really add driving value? I don't know. How hard IS it to look down at your guages? I do like what they are doing with some of the artificial views in aircraft - but that is understandably a VERY different type of tansportation.

The windshield rake is substantial, but depending on your seating position, that's just an angle calculation. Apparently the iphone now has a Heads-Up display app - but I can't realistically see using an iphone for that purpose. A heads up GPS might be cool though...

Good point on the computer - I'm imagining more of a stand-alone unit...

Looking at the Defi link, its really nothing more than a small screen projecting on to a reflecting surface. Someone makes an OBD II interface that you can connect to your computer and get digital gauges. So, what if you used something like that, with a small monitor that you can buy for less that $100 these days. Of course... you'd have to find a way to flip/invert the image.

That's true... about the refelctive surface. I still think the overall rake of the windscreen is too great, but it would be an interesting experiment. The manufacturer that Nic is talking about is this one: Chetco Digital Instruments - Digital automotive and marine gauges Very cool idea and very expensive, though probably the same amount as a decent set of standard gauges. And I'll bet they could program the "mirror image" for a potential buyer...
