Gas tank

I pulled a late model beetle tank out of the sterling but due to rust and not knowing anything about it I want to replace it now before it becomes a headache. Anyway I have the stock brackets so if I go that route I'd use an early model beetle tank and weld a filler nick to go through the rear deck in front of the engine hatch.

I have also seen some nice aluminum fuel cells on ebay in the 100-250 range. Do any of you have an aftermarket fuel tank in your cars? I'd want to attach it the same way as the beetle tank with brackets on the side bolted through the fiberglass also it'd have to have an extended filler nick to go through the rear deck. Do you have a recommendation of a gas tank builder that could do that reasonably? I'd also really like a fuel gauge.

Any thoughts?

I even thought of building an angle iron box and bolting the below tank to it. But I'm not sure if I have enough clearance for that.

I've prefer something like this just don't want to go crazy on price.

Another question: is the quality of the new beetle tanks any good? Will it last? What company makes the best?

I had a custom tank built in aluminum from Boyds Welding in Florida - first rate stuff and not overly expensive. I also have (2) SB tanks here in the garage that are clean. They wouldn't fit my car because of the a/c conversion (bottom it the fans), but you are welcome to one or both if you want them.

I think I would just replace the tank with a new one of that style. Your already setup to mount that style of tank so you wont have to re fabricate anything and it will accept the same sending unit. Wont have to rerun fuel lines or wiring

New bug gas tanks go for around $150

Save yourself some headaches of trying to fit something that wasn't meant to fit in that spot

With the standard beetle tanks do they leak often? It just seems like a few sterlings have been cut up to get to the fuel tanks so I want to reduce any chance of an issue if possible. I have to run new fuel lines and rewire anyway so that's not much of a factor.

Rick I'm almost afraid to ask but do you remember what the aluminum tank cost you? Did it fit in the same location? Does it just bolt to the fiberglass walls?

If your worried about leaks and rust put a tank sealer in the tank before you install it. It will never leak or rust then(at least from the inside*laugh*)

The only posts I remember that the owners had to cut up the car to get the tank out are the ones that didn't have a stock tank or they didn't have the patients to remove it the way it was installed.

Regardless of what you get, test the tank for leaks before you install it.

I have a custom alloy tank, holds about 65 liters, or just over twice the capacity for a standard Bug tank. And with the proper breathing tubes, have no problems filling the tank. And it still lives above the gearbox. Not that any of this really helps as I'm in Oz. *laugh*

Do any of you have a measurement of the room you'd have for a tank between the transaxle and the bottom of the rear deck? I messed up and forgot to measure when the body was on.

When I measured mine to look at options it was 30Lx15Wx10D I believe. At least thats what I have written down on my notes.
