Engine Cover

Anyone else have this ill-fitting problem with the engine cover?

The front of the cover doesn't fit down into the recess, while the front does. I'm thinking about cutting a pie wedge out and pulling that rear section in. Anyone done differently?

Yup, i have the same one on the #310 car. That's why I am making a mold of the one from the #114 car so I can make a new one for both cars.

I will also make them available after the mold is built for anyone who may need one.

Yeah, those covers were later in the production run. They never did fit well at all. I believe it was up to the owner to make their own mods to have them work. I'm not a fan of them at all...just a big 'ol box sitting there.

Yep, not happy about the fit and it IS just too bulky. So here's the start of a new engine cover....

A wooden frame 1.5" wide.

I have some stretchy fabric pulled over it and stapled on the underside. It pulls down nice over the fan housing and air filter. I'm trying to "design" a shape that fits over the fan and filter but doesn't look like its just the fan/filter under it. Something with some vents or something??? Not sure. I'll update yall as I figure it out.

What about just one of the "regular" T-shaped covers? I have one, but it's really chopped up. The one that Dave sells is too wide and is meant to cover dual carb cutouts. I'll bet Greg has a spare laying around, though!

Frame fits nice in the opening, looks like a good start. Just be sure to allow some space between the fan shroud and the bottom of your new cover. Remember these motor move around a bit when you put the pedal down. Especially as the motor mounts age.

The original style looks pretty good and works well on cars with a single carb. Rick had added a little scoop and opened up the back side for some additional cooling.

Should be a shape you can replicate pretty easily.

Ive opted for this shape, simple and I can cut an opening for the air filter if I wish. It's 1/2 thick plywood under there. I figure 1/2 should be enough wiggle room.

With a level across the top, this is how far is sticks above the rear of the car, it sticks up less than this
at the bottom of the back window. Now.... where are my chip brushes....

Nick,

The top looks a bit too flat and lines a bit too sharp (especially given everything else on the car is curved) - just my 2 cents worth :worried:

From my photo stash this is the only MK1 I could find

edit : found a another one which was modified to incorporate vents

The lines here are much more rounded and in keeping with the overall cars curves.

I have to question the thinking of the vents facing forward. Is the thinking that the air gets sucked in through the vent or its forced in as the car travels down the road? I have to wonder the direction of air flow in this area of the car. Does it tend to travel from the rear forward like in the bed of a pick up truck due to its shape or front to rear? No matter the direction of air flow, the vents will either exhaust hot air or force fresh air in. Either way its a win!
