Cup Holders

Only Audi would have a light up holder....

Best experiment for placement by holding the holder when you're seated in a driving position. Unless you have a full on custom dash like Brett, there is literally no place to put one except by your left knee down low. I'm still monkeying with a center console with holders, and the design(s) keep flipping back to the holders being slightly behind the seats on the tunnel. Awkward, but eliminates the elbow-knocking when you're shifting gears!

I think you have hit the nail on the head there Rick, that is about the only place you could have one, just forwards of the seat cushion and I have spent ages just sitting in the car with a can trying to envisage where I could put a holder, even my slide out one is no good as the only place I can reach has the radio there. If I moved the radio and switches down I could put one under the speedo and above the radio but I do not like the idea of drinks above the electrics, just in case of spillage.

Starting point for making one with an electric tray? :)

not knowing how many different designs of cup holders that are out there, who knows where you could mount one. Plus not all members have a stock interior so maybe one of these designs may work for someone in their application.

opening only needs to be 18mmX114mm +-

This one is also spring loaded so with just a touch it comes out. You do need to push it back in

That's pretty cool! But yes, I think that if you took a "regular" water bottle and sat in the drivers seat, you'll see just how tight the interior space really is. Unless your passenger wants the bottle or glass in their laps, options are pretty limited, even with a custom dashboard. Now, that said, if I had a flat dash I would be inclined to maybe try to figure out something that would fold down from the middle and cut back into the dash to provide the space needed, but I don't have one :D

Thats pretty cool.
Will there be something to keep the cup from going through the opening??
Do you have a spot picked out yet where it will go??

If there is any spillage will it damage the device??(it may happen if you have to slam on the brakes or make an evasive maneuver) Going through the junk yards I noticed on a few holders that they were covered with nasty build up from spillage from over the years and need to be cleaned to get them back in working order.

I figured if I went this route I could just widen the hole so any tapered cup would eventually find a resting spot. Wouldn't work for cans though. If something spilled it probably wouldn't get in the electronics, but used CDROM's are so cheap now it wouldn't matter, could always just move my custom tray to any one of them.

After seeing the thing a few pages back that was a drawer and dual holders I might just get that, $11 on ebay.

The one out of a cadillac.

I may still have that. If you need dimensions on it let me know.
If the one on ebay is sold before you get it I may let the one I have go. I have no use for it(if I still have it)
I was going to put it in the center console that I built but the design of the console changed and it no longer would work.

02 Saab

Top bracket can be removed. I left it attached in case its needed for mounting the holder.
This thing is only 1/2" thick

I'm pretty sure most cd drive close after a period of time.

What you really want is one of these. saab 9-3 cup holder

There are spring controlled cup holders that you push a button and they slide out.

Came across one of these.

The engineering that went into it is impressive, however because of its length I think that would restrict where it could be placed.

Went to the yards the other day to get ideas for the center console and one thing jumped out at me. About 75% of the consoles had cup holders incorporated into them, 20% had nothing and the rest had switches.

Well I saw this and thought I might be able to use it but after I tried it out I decided not to use it.

Came out of a 2001 Jaguar S Type

Lid is spring loaded and has a push release/push close latch.

Measures about 4 1/2" wide X 5" long

Jag cup holders

I found a dual cup holder over the hump in the back seat of @ 2004 XJS. I mounted it to the rear of the passenger side pod. Anyone else ever see one?

It is amazing how few places in a Nova (Less in a SS) that are free for a cup holder.*very frustrated*

Your elbow is going to be constantly hitting that, Tom, nevermind actually having a drink there.

My car is to be set up for only one seat. When there will be a passenger an auxiliary seat will be used that will be positioned just in front of the firewall. In my past Sterlings about 95% of the time I was alone when driving. This also provides space for golf clubs or even grocerys.

I think you have thought through this and they are in the best spot you can find!
