I can get the engine to fire, but dies soon after. I've got fuel running to the carbs, but it does'nt seem to be filling the float bowls. I have duel webber IDF 44's.

What I'm I doing wrong?*very frustrated*

Do you have constant pressure of fuel to the carbs? A pressure valve on the line (if you don't - you should - set to no more than 3.5psi)? New (cheap MX carbs) or good used (Italian) carbs?

I forgot to mention, I have to squirt gas into the carbs to get her to fire.

Electric fuel pump, 4lb pressure
New filters
Steady flow of gas thru the lines up to carbs

For some reason the carbs are dry, like gas is'nt getting in. This set-up ran fine last year.

Get a rebuild kit for them. You'll need to pull the tops off to reveal the float chamber and the gasket there may not come off in one piece. If they were just run and stored without any kind of prep, all kinds of things could be gummed up. In any case, personally I would pull the tops off and, without the coil hooked up, put power to the fuel pump and see if the float chambers fill. Be careful, of course, but the gas shouldn't spill over if the floats are set right. If gas fills the chamber, then you know you have other issues like clogged idle jets and/or passageways. Like Brett said, it might just be a stuck float valve, but you'll still need to access the floats to fix that.

Apart from getting an exploded diagram, jot down a note of each part, location and ref# if any, as you go, then resemble in reverse order.
Never had a Weber apart as DellOrtos are more popular here. but on the Dells you need to take care not to loose the tiny ball bearings in the accelerator pump tubes.

Nope: 44 IDF

If you're not sure on them, I'll go through them for you. Have they been recently rebuilt? Did they come with the engine?

Thanks for the help guys*thumbs up*. I'm thinking the old gas in the carbs from the test runs and break in, has turned to goo.-confused*.

Maybe. If they've been sitting, and you don't know the history on them, the alcohol in the gas could have eaten away some of the rubber inside, like the accelerator pump assembly. You could try taking off the feed hose, tuck some cloth around the base and spray carb cleaner into the inlet feed. There should be a screen filter (large nut at the feed on top - see 7-8-9 in the diagram) so you'll want to remove that, clean it, then shoot the cleaner in. Hopefully that will work loose any gunk, but really, if it isn't getting any gas at all, they should be torn down and gone through. No sense in knocking debris loose to get caught up in the little ports and causing more issues. Theoretically (and I've done this, but certainly not recommended) you could soak the entire carb in cleaner or lacquer thinner and just shake loose whatever comes out. Work the accelerator pump a few times to make sure the mains are clear; idle jets and float valves you can't do much without removing those.

If you even suspect grungy fuel I would recommend stripping and an overhaul kit, it will save you time and frustration in the long term. not difficult, even I did my Dells myself *oh my*.

I haven't taken the tops off yet, waiting for the rebuild kits. I have confirmed, that fuel is in the float bowls.

*thumbs up* Plugged circuits it is, then. Get the specs on the float levels while you're waiting - might as well set everything up right since you'll have them apart.

I opened them up today one float stuck closed, both carbs looked like someone put a spoonful of jello in them. One is cleaned up and everything seems tobe working, the other is soaking overnite.

That's the ethanol at work in the gas. Make sure you blow out all the passages from the bottom upwards with a can of carb cleaner. Don't poke anything into those progression holes other than the cleaner nozzle!

Rebuild kits came in today. One carb rebuilt, one to go. I did verify, these are older Webers, not the newer ones.
