Engine

So I finally got around to doing a little engine break down on the ARPM engine.
It has a nice counter weighted crank 86mm.
Nice Rods (not sure mfg yet).
The cam doesn't have any markings on it as far as I can tell. But since it was a sand drag motor I'm thinking its a pretty radical one. I'll try and compare it to a few cams I already own to get an idea if I want to try it. It also has straight cut gears installed.
I believe JE Pistons 94mm.
Heads I will replace and the cylinders will also need to go.
Just took things apart today and started to clean things up. Lots of silicone to remove.
The case is truly a work of art! I guess these cases are the best of the best at the time they were being made. I'm excited to get working on the build once I figure out what and how I'm going to build it. I'll be asking the experts on theSamba for help with this one.

Since I'm going with the race car idea on this build, I'm going to try and keep it as a dry sump set-up. I'm also looking forward to being able to say this car is Dynosoar powered!

Here is a link to info on Deano Dyno-Soar and its history. If you are into VW aftermarket history and racing, its a worth while read.

Turbo is not in the picture for this motor. I am doing a 1914 turbo motor also right now. I don't have a project for it right now but It will be together and ready when the time comes.

Working on finishing the paint job then on to final assembly. I'm trying to finish for a Daytona VW show and track event the day after. I'm hoping to make laps on the Daytona Speedway with Gulf Sterling.

Looks good Roger.
Sorry I haven't been following your build. Is there alot more to be done or is this the last major part in the build??

I am painting the last of the body parts now. Roof, hood, rear fenderettes and center console.

I still have the dash and a few satin black parts to paint after. Then its on to reassembly.

I have until mid-day on April 1st to be finished and loaded on a trailer to attend the show on the 2nd. The track day is on Sunday the 3rd.

I am bustin butt as much as this old body will allow.

Wish me luck!!

WOW!
Your definitely going to have to put some long hours in.
Waiting for the paint to dry before you can proceed to the next stage will hold you back the most I think.

Well,,, kick it into high gear and go for it.

In my build I've gotten to the point where I'm in no hurry to finish it.

Got the rest of the body parts painted today. Next will be my dash, wing, spoiler and ground effects in satin black.

I will wait a few days before I wet sand and buff. The clear really laid down nice. Not much orange peel but certainly a little dust. That's what you get with a garage paint job.

It looks amazing! Great job!
What kind of clear coat did you use? I used Eastwood's European CC and had terrible orange peel. (Just wondering if better stuff sprays better or if it's all technique/experience)

Thanks! I used Montana Brand / Big Sky. Its a high solids clear coat. Pretty good stuff. It was pretty warm but I used a slow cat instead of med. It gives it more time to flatten out but does allow more time to get dust / debris in it.

I'm mocking up the motor installation. A few things will change, but the long block stays. A bunch of new parts are on order. Weather or not they arrive in time I will wait and see. If not it will be plan b, use what I have. This motor is a 1776, 110 cam, ratio rockers, big valve heads ported and polished, and some other misc goodies. Dual HPMX carbs with 6" air cleaners so they extend out of the engine bay. I will make aluminum wraps and put that on the bottom of the filter element so it draws its air from above the engine cover. Fan shroud and tins will be painted to match. Dual cannon exhaust will be wrapped with heat shield.

That is all of the body work the car will have. The original was in rough shape and I didn't want to make another. The engine compartment cover is clear acrylic. Dual remote cooling fans can be seen on both sides of the engine bay. With the 2 oil coolers, misc hose, remote spin on filter and deep engine sump I'm guessing it will hold about 4.5 to 5 quarts of oil.

I still have to paint the rear window trim, rear spoiler and rear wing thingy ( I forget what I use to call it).

Looks nice, Roger. You do clean work.

This is the first time I noticed that the orange stripe continues through the center console of the car. Ha! Nice touch.

I forget how you plan to finish the back. Am I right that you’re just leaving the back side of the engine exposed? That’s fine if you are; I don’t think I’ve ever had a engine pretty enough that I wanted anyone looking directly at it. (Ha!)

How does that work with law enforcement in your state? I know in PA it’s a small miracle we can get Sterlings inspected. They would definitely balk at an open engine.

With this paint I'm using a 1.3 for the base coat and clear coat.

The paint I'm using is Metalux which has a 2:1 mix ratio.
Base coat I used a med reducer and the clear I used a slow reducer.
Reducer is always temperature dependent.

Clear is a 2k Urethane Clear Coat High Solids

Thanks!

The center console was not supposed to have the stripe. I had a bad run in the up right section where some switches go and had to sand it out. I didn't have any more blue paint so that forced me to do the stripe. And now I kinda like it.

Back will stay open like in the photos. Engine will be pretty when I'm done. Florida let you get away with a lot when it come to cars / hot rods. No inspections here.

I drive this all of the time out to the beach, never got a second look from LE.
