Can someone post up some decent links to good priced transmissions? especially for those 5 speed liquid cooled oriented ppl?

Ones on ebay are climbing high quick 800 to over 3K.

You can find them on Craig's List and swap meets. I found my last 901 5sp on Craig's list as a parting out 914. After I found out that this transmission was only rated for 150 ft/lbs (not including 1st gear), I sold it. I can upgrade the stock VW 4sp much cheaper and the VW trans fits the pan. No special or weird modifications needed. With the flat torque curve of the Subaru engine I was using, the need for a 5sp was not there.

You can have a 'freeway flyer' transaxle built for far cheaper than a 901 conversion. In the build you can also have a Gene Berg 5 speed installed for a bit more money, but less hassle than fitting a Porsche transmission. Like Shane mentioned, 901's are notoriously weak for anything other than a T4 engine; to handle more horsepower a transaxle like a G50 or G60 would be a better candidate - but you'll pay the cost in purchasing and fitting.

The "extra" speed is not just an add on for highway driving. Think of it as an extra speed between the first and last gears. The stock VW 4sp is an overdrive transmission. When you start to build engines with very peaky torque curves, then the extra speeds in the transmission keep the engine in the peak torque. Some of the new 6sp on big engine cars now days are only for fuel efficiency. I believe the top speed in Lambo now is in 5sp as there is not enough torque to push the car at high speed in 6th gear.

my sebring has a watercooled engine, and runs bout 3000 rpm on the highway. i don't have the freeway flyer, but thought about getttin one to build up and install. also thought bout just getting a different overdrive gear, maybe lower than the freeway flyer...if that possible....but since i don't have the freeway flyer, i don't know how much the difference is. i'd be happy with a 500 rpm drop while cruising the highway!

My 2001 chevy 1500 silverado runs about 1500 rpms on the highway, and my wifes v-6 2000 intrepid runs about 2000. So What ever you cruz at should be your optimal rpm for mileage.

Your car would certainly benefit from the freeway flyer combination. 3K is really high for a watercooled engine - my little 1.7 in my Rabbit turns that, and it's an automatic tranny! Look into that - I think the investment would be well worth it, especially in gas money savings!

yes, i def wanna atleast swap in the different overdrive gear. really i just need to overhaul the transaxle, new boots on the axles, new seals and it will be good. has a new clutch already. so i figure swap in the freeway flyer gear instead, and be good. even though i turn out 3k, i still get round 23 mixed driving!
