Digging on another thread in another forum. Front engine air cooled VW to a rear-drive via a Porsche 924 torque tube and differential. Don't know how well it would work on a Sterling, being a heavier car, but definitely food for thought for thinking outside the box!

Somewhere on my computer, or maybe an old back up disc, I have a scan of I think it was a page from a book(??) that showed the VW Mk1 Golf/Rabbit with an air cooled Bug motor in it. The picture was an illustration from memory. And the text with it said that some Golfs left the factory with air cooled motors in them to use up old stock, or something along those lines. Just had a quick (real quick) look around the interwebs and I can't find it now either.

*hmmm* as the Golf is FWD wouldn't the air cooled lump need to sit sideways under the bonnet?

Not from memory, but it's been a few years since I seen the image. I'll keep an eye out for it though.
