AC option

Went to the pick a part yard today and came up empty for what I was looking for so I thought I would check out something that Yaughn and myself have dicussed in the past but have never realy persued it.

AC units that are used in SUV's in the rear section. this is not the main unit that is under the dash but a secondary one that they put in the back behind a panel to cool the back half of the SUV. They are just for cooling, no heat. Some of the SUV had the climate control panel in the back also. This was seperate from the main control panel.
The SUV that I looked at was a 1996 Land Rover because it was picked over and it was easy to get to the unit.

Well I guess you don't get to see the pictures. I took them from my phone and I guess the file is to big for the web site to load them up

Demensions are 17" tall 20 1/2" wide and 6 1/2" thick. I would guess you could mount it in any position

If anyone has a trick to get them to up load I can send them to you and you can work your magic.

Also had a picture of an AC unit from a 2000 sienna that had potential. No telling what other sizes are out there. Nissan had one in their SUV but I didn't want to spend the time getting to it.

Sorry about the pictures

Yep, or to me. Email can be picked off my profile if you don't have it already.

Is that a Hawker Hurricane or Spitfire in your avatar?

Thanks Rick

I had no patients yesterday for the computer. I was trying to finish the install of the gas tank and I was spending way to much time on the computer trying to figure that out than I wanted.

Is that a Hawker Hurricane or Spitfire in your avatar?
Its a Spitfire

Just save in your fav' art programme like Paint Shop or Photoshop or even Windows 'Paint' and 'resize' from the 'image' menu. tick retain aspect or ratio and enter 5" in the height. Should do it.
Or e-mail me it and I'll do it.

The issue was, for some reason, that the images were bitmap extensions (.bmp) that the forum wasn't recognizing for some reason. Re-saved as a .jpg and all was well.

Well I just found out how to convert a bitmap to a jpg. See you never stop learning.(I was wondering how rick did it)

OK back to the ac unit

These units are fairly compact . Its just finding the one that works best.

The Nissan Quest had a simple control panel for just the rear unit and it was located in the back, and I think with little effort these would fit in the side pod. Then just run the vent lines to where you want them. You wouldn't have to mount it under the dash and loose leg room

You will still need to come up with a compressor.

Maybe when it gets cooler out I'll spend some time seeing what else is out there and get a directory going of the stuff I find with some info for each unit

Remember this is just for cooling no heater

I was giving this some more thought and the unit could go behind the seats(lots of room there for the unit). With that location all of the plumbing to the compressor would be close and real easy to hook up. Then you could make a center console and run the wiring for the control panel down the center and put the switches in that. you could run Vent lines down the center console also or just put diverters on the unit and let it blow from behind the seats straight up. the air would circulate up and to the front of the car.

Cann't get much simpler than that

Maybe I can find a schematic on these units

What external parts are there on these units or is it just a case of 12v and a control `panel?

I have not done a complete break down on these systems. I thought I would first see if there is any intrest in this before I spend any more time with it and since your the first I don't have much to share on it.
I don't suppose anyone out there has looked in to these and could help out??? is there??

From what I can tell, the unit that you see has the blower , evaporator and the vent mixer (or what ever its called to direct the air to the vents) as one unit. You would still need a compressor and the condensor and what ever climate control panel that you choose to use(thats my guess).

Some years of the nissan quest the control panel has vents part of it. May be this would be of some help with the install

I would guess over in spain you should have better options to go with than what we have here in the US. Over here everything is built to big. Don't know why but it just is. Cann't see any reason for it.

Thanks for the intrest

i would be interested in a complete self contained unit that doesnt need any other sources. just run power to it and call it good. i know im prolly dreaming on that though

They're out there. Look at golf cart a/c systems. No.. I'm not kidding! But they still take up a bit of space for the evaporator unit. Your other option is a 12v pump and system from these folks: Air Conditioner Compressor Drive Unit 12 & 24 Volt DC Powered » QDS Inc. or smaller yet: MasterFlux - Products

Almost pulled the trigger on the Masterflux unit, but even their largest put out half the cooling of a traditional belt driven compressor. And the amp draw was/is fairly large as well.

I gots lots o' bookmarks for all the a/c systems I researched - well over a dozen!

That's what I have been banging on about four ages, a compressor driven by a 12v DC motor with all the gubbins as usual. 70 Lbs. though, heavy. mind you would even up the weight distribution on a Nova.

Went to the yards today and found this. Pictures are from my phone so they aren't that good but enough to show the unit.
Unit is from a Mazda MPV
Haven't bought it yet, I wanted to make sure it will work. There's a no return policy at the yards.
Yes the blower motor is at a skew to the rest of the unit.
The front dash had a push buttom switch to turn on the unit, marked "Rear AC".

You would still need the condensor and the compressor

Went to the junk yard and found something that might be of intrest to a few of you.

I was going down the Dodge lines and I wasn't aware that dodge durangos had rear ac units in them till now.

Now this next part is going to be hard to believe but I found an AC unit in one of them that has the evaporator and blower motor mounted in the roof. the unit measures 32" long X 12" wide and get this only 3" thick.
Didn't get a picture of it but I was all set to get it till I found something else.

Did a quick search for a picture on the internet and only found these pictures

After pulling that unit I continued to look a little more. The I came across this in another Durango.

This unit had the heater in it also, so I didn't get the first unit that I found and got this one instead.
This unit is very compact and the long section on it is nothing more than an air duct with a diverter flap at the end.

If interested I can get the demensions on it tomorrow after I clean it up.

Got an email from a member asking if I could take a picture of the Durango unit next to the MPV unit, so here it is. Keep in mind that the Durango unit is a AC/heater while the MPV is just AC
P2060004.jpg

The flapper valve at the end will be used to route the air to the heater vents or to the AC vents depending on the function selected.

Do you know what year or year range Durango that AC/heat unit came from?

Edit......

Did some websearch and it looks like they used that model from 98-2009. If so that's awesome should make finding one easy.

Do you foresee any issues with the unit?

I was planing on building a storage shelf behind the seats in my sebring. Something like this would fit under the shelf and give me heat as well. The heat in this system is just the blower going over a heated core right not like the Vw heaters?
