Honestly I'd rather it be quiet then a trumpet exhaust. I even considered a sidewinder exhaust but they can be very loud too. This seems like a good cost effective solution that should still be a little better then a 1" stock type 1 exhaust but quiet enough to drive to carisle in ;)

I know it was just an example. They come in all sizes. But it add some dynamics to the exhaust in automatic mode. Or it would add select-ability in manual mode.
Having a loud exhaust is cool for about a week. After that it quickly becomes irritating.

Im pretty sure VW engine do require back pressure. I had a single port 1600 that didnt like not having it. You can hear the valves really bad when there isnt any back pressure.

The VW certainly needs back pressure, in fact all engines need it to function correctly and economically and the calculations to get the right length, diameter and convergence points are quite complicated.

I think the people that are in the drag racing sport would not agree with you.

I figure your statement was for cars in general(and you would be right) but you did say "all engines":D Couldn't let that statement slide by.

Not if you have a book with the formula's in it and know alittle math :D*nothing to see*

Just wanted to point out that there are books out there and you can probably find the formula's on the internet that will help you build your own exhaust system. So it's not as hard as it may have once been to find that elusive "sweet spot" in the power band.*thumbs up*

The nice thing about the suby conversions is you can pretty much do what you want after the cat. Turbos are an exception to that though.

A local scooby and VW tuner I recently talked to at the burlington WA Subaru dealership also told me by modifying the length of the #1 and #3 exhaust header lengths he could make an air-cooled VW sound just as rumbly as a WRX. Would be interesting to see that happen.
