Are there any exhaust options for the original vw sterlings that aren't visible except for the tips? Whats on there now looks like a hemorrhoid hanging down from the rear end.

Other than fabricating something on your own, SSC has a system that's close to the original, though without the square tips, which you could purchase from any automotive retailer:

The other options are the zoom tubes, they work - I've had them, but tend to be loud and you'll lose a certain amount of engine power. They come in two forms, the low zoom:

and the high zoom:

I can't attest to the body clearance of the high zooms as I've never fitted them. The low zooms come out about 5" below the rear valance.

Yeah the top pic looks similar to what i have, i dont want to see anything at all. Know anyone with the second option installed on their sterling that has a pic?

My old car with the low zoomies. Looking at this photo now, I'm pretty confident the high zoomies will clear that rear valance. You'll always see something unless you custom build.

I've been exhaust shopping and found this post. Rick you mentioned the high zoom tubs should fit, do you think they would work with dual 40 carbs with the type3 lower intakes?

Or should do you think bazookas would be better? I know both of these systems would lower engine performance I just don't want the exhaust to be an eyesore.

Does Dave still make his exhaust I couldn't find it on the SSC website.

I also found this picture somewhere that almost looks like the tri-mil bazooka exhaust with a bigger muffler attached.

Does anyone know what that is or know of another system that would fit better.

I did see the post about the downforce headers the face forward that could go into a 180 then muffler and into stock location. Has anyone built a system like this that exits out the rear?

Thanks in advance
Brian

Unless you are running one of the above or custom made, 99% of 4:1:2 systems have a header behind the pulley and it will show, the modified Ahnendorp system I use is like most, so I am (one day) going to fit a small diffuser/wing across the rear to reduce the visible part. (I would like to fit a Nova MkIV valance but SSs are one piece bodies)
Ahnendorp B.A.S.

The easiest way I found was to reverse the standard VW headers and J pipes so they face forwards to a 180 bend next to the torsion tubes and then use the space alongside the gearbox and over the axles for silencers and then rear to exits of your choice.

^ Yup. I don't know if Dave still offers that exhaust, a phone call would answer that. Steve on Long Island had that BAS on his car before it sold. Looked reasonably good and sounded fine. Anything else is a compromise and without custom welding up a system, you're stuck with what's commercially available. If I hadn't had to saw off my old system you could have had that for free *laugh*

Gee thanks rick, nothing like being a day late and a dollar short. Anyway Peter the system looks great but at 620 euros or 1000ish US I'd probably be better off either fabricating it myself or having it made. Peter are you running a dual carb with that exhaust? If not do you think a set would fit and any downsides to that setup?

I have reservations about using bazooka exhaust, I'd rather the car not sound like a dune buggy and I'd like to make the cabin as quite as possible. I had a variation of that exhaust on my buggy and it was way to loud.

I left a message for Dave maybe he'll have a set available.

So is the general consensus that using a system like below and doing the 180 bend would be fairly strait forward way to go? Has anyone done this?

I still have the mufflers and tips from my current car, Brian. You'll need to figure out a system (or build one) but you can have those. Loud, but not as loud as the typical bazooka. I'm simply changing my mufflers out for something a little quieter. The tips are welded on..

And I have enough scraps of pipe we can probably cobble together a system for yours, especially if you have an engine that's out of the car. Makes life so much easier..

And just saw your G-down post; yes, I've done that with my buggy and current car. I didn't use the G-down though, simply modified a set of bazooka's, though the G-down has the advantage of having the exhaust port mounts already turned. If they have those in an unpainted steel, you'll be way ahead of the game.

I'll take you up on that rick. I thought about buying the empi ones and modifying them but these should be much more strait forward. Also these should be a lot more exact then I could piece together and I will give me a solid structure to weld supports too to hold the mufflers and tips on the way back out the rear.

I have dual DellOrto DRLA 40 carbs but that exhaust will run a single too.
Those G-Down at $260 seem very reasonable and most of the work done for you.*thumbs up*
But it looks like you and Rick should have one sorted soon anyway.

And yes, the alternator is in the centre.:D

Couple of times myself. just a bit added on to take it to the front of the gearbox and a 180, then back with a couple of boxes over the axles and finish to desired position and tips. easy.

I can't recall what that sounded like on his car when he was driving it around this year. It wasn't loud... in fact, it must have been fairly unobtrusive as I didn't even take notice of it. Comes in ceramic coated, too, if you go to the Tri-Mill website...
