I dug out a slightly better photo from my stash for reference. In this shot you can see where the kitty hair fiberglass filler is (not so easy to see once all painted black). You can also see the rivnet which is recessed at the bottom in the photo (because the sides are not vertical). You also see the grommet and end of the hex cap bolt that goes through into the body. The body side has a similar recessed rivnet. As my cap head bolts are such as tight fit in my kitty hair I haven't actually bothered putting nuts on them once they are pushed through into the fenders.

And last but not least the hex cap bolts are stainless steel also:D

Fuel Tank

Picked up my new tank tonight. I wish I could tig weld like this!

I had a local guy who builds boat tanks and t-top make it for me. 1/8" Aluminum sheet cut to my specs. Welded up and pressure tested for 24 hours. The mounting block is pre-cut for the sending unit before welding in. VDO sending unit and a matching gauge in the dash. Tank holds 11.75 gals and has a lowered sump where my pick up bung is mounted. He will build any tank up to 19 gals for $350. $25 extra for the sending unit block plus tax $402 total. Gauge was $29 and sending unit was $43.

Tank 2

Got the tank in place and made the front bracket which bolts to the body.

Cut my filler hose and dry fit the cap. PERFECT! *rock on*

I need to paint the new bracket tomorrow then I should be able to install the tank for the last time.

I was struggling with motivation over the weekend and getting easily distracted from working on the car. Decided to throw the wheels back on and get the car in the driveway for a bath. That also gave me a chance to get the garage floor washed again and a few things put away.

Thanks Guys! I appreciate the comments. I'm trying to stay focused, but the ADD kicks in and I want to stray. *laugh*

Had the day off so I spent it in the garage.

I got the top of the transaxle degreased since once the tank is mounted I won't have access again.

Worked on making the area around the tank look nice. I covered all the big holes with aluminum tape and will glass them in from inside the wheel well. Got the tank support painted and installed and tank in place.

Got my side view mirrors mounted. I think they really fit the car nicely! A general clean up and reassemble since I have a pretty busy work week ahead.

Exhaust

Played around with my exhaust today. Got the pipes wrapped in header/exhaust wrap. Got it mounted on a mock up motor so I could fab up the tail section. I'll finish up the welding and then wrap the rest. Not sure how the super trap will sound, but I sure hope I like it *sounds great*.
The header is about 3 to 4 inches from the rear valance. I hope the header wrap does enough to protect the fiberglass. If not I'll fab up a heat shield to put between the exhaust and rear valance.

Had to clearance the transaxle for the flywheel on the mock up motor. I really don't know how the other motor and flywheel fit since it had never been done. Maybe that explains why the teeth are so chewed up. I thought the worn starter bushing was the reason and maybe it still is. But none the less its done now anyway.

The motor parts I ordered have come in so hopefully I'll get it back together real soon. I'll pretty it up just a bit before it gets reinstalled.

Because the old motor was a 6V setup that was converted to 12V. There had been issues with a loose pilot bushing on the starter when I had it; the bushing had egged the hole (must have caught on the nose of the bendix at some point), so I had installed an auto starter.. don't know if it was still there when you picked it up. But that would explain the worn teeth on the flywheel..

It's so nice to see an exhaust on an aircooled motor without all the entrails hanging down which is so often the case *thumbs up*

I haven't removed it yet but I'm thinking that maybe the flywheel is still a 6volt flywheel. It would be hard to believe since it is a lightened flywheel and I didn't even know they were available. -confused*

That would make perfect sense as to why the teeth are chewed up, a 6volt flywheel (109 teeth & 3mm smaller) and a 12 volt starter.

I guess a new chromoly lightened flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing will need to be added to the parts list.

I think the original owner lightened the flywheel himself. He was a mechanical engineer with a basement full of milling machines. But yeah, since you're in there, might as well make everything new just because.. *thumbs up*

Turns out that the new starter did damage the old flywheel. The flywheel was still a 6volt so the mismatch was the culprit. The flywheel must have only weighed about 9 lbs, I have never seen one so light.

The crank has been drilled for 8 dowel but they had to be ground down for the new lightened chromoly flywheel (12.5 lbs). The end play was reset and the original clutch and pressure plate were reinstalled. They were in like new condition other then having to surface the pressure plate just a bit. I will swap out the throwout bearing while I have the motor out.

I did revisit my motor mockup over the weekend as well. Once my new oil pump arrives from CB Performance I will be able to paint and reassemble the motor. I'm not going to go detail crazy on the motor as I just want a clean look to it.

I got the oil new oil pump installed the beginning of the week. Pisses me off that I special ordered a oil pump from CB Performance a waited a week for something I had to alter anyway.

I waited for the correct oil pump early style w/ 6mm stud holes. It was a brosol pump with the small oil ports that match the case. The stud holes were so far off *humpf* I had to drill out the holes to 8mm anyway. Could have just used what I had in stock and saved myself the $40 *explitive rant* I expect that from EMPI but not an OEM!

Otherwise I'm Just working on cleaning up and painting the motor and parts. Motor is just gloss black engine enamel and the tins are black hammer finish.
