Cold day here is Tampa Bay but got to spend some time in the shop.

I laid up the new lower scoops this afternoon. I gave the resin an extra kick so hopefully the cold temps don't slow it down too much. I hope I can pull them tomorrow. I cheated a little with the heat gun but I found that isn't always a good practice. I'm anxious to see how they look on the car. I laid them up using tooling gel *very frustrated* I don't know what I was thinking. It doesn't matter really, but I do have black and I would have rather seen them in black so I can get an idea of how they will look painted. Oh well, I'll be painting the rest of my black parts next week.



I also got the passenger side top scoop mounted and all the holes drilled. I really don't want to be thinking about drilling holes when I have fresh new paint on the car.

Lower Scoops Finished

Despite the cold temps last night and this morning the scoops set up well over night.



Got them pulled out of the mold and started trimming them up.







I think next set I make will be only 2 layers of 1.5 oz mat. These seem a little heavier then necessary.

Lower Scoops Trial Fit

After a little grinding (and maybe still some more) I've got the scoops in place.

Back inside the pod around the mesh will be painted black.









Next step will be to prime and paint.

How you planning to attach the lower scoops, bond them on?

Nice to see some custom after market additions that others can easily add to their cars.

Same as the other scoops. Button headed stainless allen head fasteners. The bolt on appearance is part of the race car theme of the car.

In my attempts to update the look and hopefully create some renewed interest in these cars I have recreated the following parts: A new dash with built in AC, a condenser shroud, 6 new bolt on scoops, a rear visor, rear spoiler, rear window trim, a center console, new interior pockets, seat backs and a rear valance.

I know what I have made won't be everyones taste, but maybe it will get some to try to do something they were once uncomfortable to try on their own. I'm probably 30 years too late for kit cars in this country though *laugh*.

I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous of the kit car scene you guys a crossed the pond have going on.

It's all marketing, the kit car scene here (well in the UK I mean, in Singapore it doesn't exist at all) is a poor reflection on what it once was. We use to have at least 5 reasonably big Kit Car focused shows each year. We are now down to 1 one and even that is a shadow of its former self.

I guess when I have watched the youtube videos about Stones it appears huge. I guess its fading there as much as here.

Rear Grill

Finally found a new rear grill material I like. Got it installed this evening after work. Makes a big difference. Looks even better straight on from the rear but couldn't get a photo.

Lower Scoops

Got a few minutes after work to finish grinding the back side of the scoop and fitting it to the car.
I think I like the look.







1 down and 1 to go. I might even get to finish the paint this weekend!

I think the scoop shape works for the car and doesn't detract from the original lines although I would bond it on and blend in if I were fitting it. I know your theme is for the riveted on look though

I agree that bonded on and blended in would look very nice. I think it would make for a more refined and classy looking car sports car. That may be something I consider with a future car but its the exact opposite of what I was going for with this car. I'm just not a refined and classy guy! *na-na-na*

Got to spend half a day in the shop today. I got my drivers side lower scoop sorted and installed. I also painted the under side of the hood just to clean it up and give it that finished look.

Spent the remaining time with a red scuff pad going over the car and getting it ready for paint. filled in a few pin holes and got some primer on the prior repairs from last week.

Really hard to not paint it tonight but after I returned from homedepot with a new paper suit and started looking over the car one last time, I found 2 gnats walking on the car! That's all I had to see to make up my mind. Night time in a pretend paint booth is just not the time of day to paint. It just doesn't seal tight enough to keep the flying insects out! *explitive rant*

Looking good. what are the two holes for on the top edge of the bonnet?

The holes are for the hinge that was originally on the car. I didn't fill them because if I didn't come up with something I liked better I was going to use them again. They worked ok. didn't look great, but better then some of the alternatives.

Roger I realize the Cimbria and Sterling are distant cousins, but is there a reason not to consider some version of a fwd hinged front trunk? Rear hinged appears to have clearance issues with the top when both are open, although mine might too unless made to opened more.

I do believe some have done this but in the Sterling, the roof would have to be closed in order to open the front hood where as with the rear hinge, the roof can be open and you can still open the hood. The original hinge design is just a little hooky since its just two pivot pins at the rear corners. Good news is, in a Sterling, there isn't much of a reason to open the hood very often since there is nuttin up there! *laugh*

A couple of guys are working on hinge alternatives. I'm waiting till they come up with a solution then I'll just cheat!

The Sebring had beefed up front hindge set up like that too I regret not pulling that off of the the car before I sold it but there were enough loose pieces on that car. I'm waiting on the hood cheat too *thumbs up*

Sunday Paint Day

Got the body sprayed out today.

I see some wet sanding in my very near future!

Looking very shiny indeed. Now for my regular question What are those holes for.. the ones along the front edge of the body?
