  1. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

The video from a few weeks ago when I stupidly shut off the Sterling away from home and it wouldn't restart. I knew I didn't have much battery left and my canopy is electric, so would I have enough power to Open the canopy, get out, then Close the canopy so I could then open the hood to access...
  2. Would like to know what drugs this guy is taking

I think I need my brain checked...I looked at that and thought "eh, not so bad...I've seen - and bought - worse!" :ROFLMAO::rolleyes:
  3. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Looking online, it appears that Menards carries an AC Delco Group 40R battery with 610 CCA & 105 minute Reserve for only $114 on sale. 6.8" tall. I'll have to make a new hold-down bracket, but I'll have all winter to do so! (we got our first inch of snow today...sigh)
  4. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Recommended by what Manufacturer? The engine turns over fine and starts within seconds when the battery charge is fresh. I wish I could find a Long and Wide but Short battery...they all get Taller as power increases. I gotta keep the height down... Changing alternator speed isn't an option due...
  5. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Thinking some more, I doubt it's the starter or "heat soak" of the battery or something. Why? Because when I got stuck in the car October 19th and had to Duke-Boys it out the window, the car fired right up after a jump start and it had only been sitting a few minutes - not enough time for...
  6. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

So....that "direct fit" alternator still required modifying the tensioning arm (due to a change in pulley size and therefore belt tension) and fabricating two new wires (4ga + from the starter and 8ga - to the engine block). And then I took it for a spin. Meh...volt gauge says ~11 volts at...
  7. Canopy Weight

    with or without windshield installed?
  8. Seat Belts

Plus, in an accident, there is already a physical stop to prevent your body from pitching forward: THE ROOF! :ROFLMAO: All kidding aside, based on the reclined seating position, odds are in a sudden stop that the occupant of a Sterling will most likely "slide" forward rather than "pitch" forward.
  9. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Well, based on the Date Code on my alternator, it was built in the 20th week of 1997! Time for a new one! So I bit the bullet and bought a direct replacement for 3x the cost and 2x the wait. Why? Because then I won't have to modify my belts/pulleys/bracket to make the "Universal Fit"...
  10. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Yesterday morning I decided to take a ride over to a buddy's house to show him the car. Maybe 10 miles round trip. I've had the Sterling on a charger since the last time I drove it, and she started right up in the garage. At his house I shut it off, then when I went to restart it to take him...
  11. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Slow morning at work so I'll post an update... I just reached in with a nut driver and tightened a few hose clamps and that seemed to fix the coolant leak issue on the valley pan (knock on wood!). I also "hot wired" (is that the correct term when we're talking about a GROUND wire though...
  12. Seat Belts

I just use an old-fashioned (but New) manual-adjustment lap belt. Short half of the belt mounts to the factory M14 (?) threaded holes in the center tunnel. Other half of the belt (with adjustment & buckle) mounts to a 7/16" bolt thru the "back seat floor pan". I bought mine from Seatbelt...
  13. Sterling #S009

In my experience (2006-2020), that's par for the course! lol
  14. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

I replaced the alternator belt (thank you Amazon!) and re-set the AC pump belt (not that the system is charged at all). The damn AC belt will NOT stay on! I think it must be an alignment issue - that belt is a 5-rib serpentine belt, so it doesn't take much to get it to jump off that "shallow"...
  15. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Well, the plan for this morning was to head to a local church for my first car show. Too bad my battery decided it would rather "sleep in" this morning. So I missed that show while the battery trickle charged... I never got a green light on the charger, but by 4:30 I decided to give it a shot...
  16. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

I have a windshield! It only took SEVEN attempts to find someone willing to install it...the major players didn't want to touch it due to "liability concerns". I finally found a kid who had 7 years experience, but had just started his own company 5 months ago, so he was looking for work for...
  17. Sterling #130 (aka American V8 ~ Chapter 2)

Once the battery had a full charge, the alarm and water pump behaved normally. I've been dealing with a nasty summer cold/allergies (had it the same time last summer, so I know it's environmentally-related), so Labor Day weekend was spent sitting on the porch in a Benadryl-haze with a book and...
  18. Torque with wheel adapters?

as expected, I'm WAY over-torqueing the nuts!! dammit...i had them at 80 before and should have left them there... FYI, the Chevy adapters use 7/16" threads, so 70-75 was the magic number. only 33% over! lol
